喜愛西洋老歌的朋友提到《What a Wonderful World》自然都會想到 Louis Armstrong
在 1967 年他以豐富的人生閱歷與滄桑而渾厚的嗓音，征服每一個歌迷的耳朵和心
其實早在 1960 年，另一位黑人歌手就已經發行了《What a Wonderful World》單曲
只是這首歌曲的內容是一首校園情歌的主題，但這位歌手 Sam Cooke 其實來頭不小
1931 年 Sam Cooke 出生於密西西比州，父親是位牧師，童年時期全家搬到芝加哥
Sam Cooke 有不錯的歌唱天賦，和他的兄弟姐妹組成了一個福音合唱團，深獲好評
1957 年 Sam Cooke 和 Keen 唱片簽約並發行了他的第一支冠軍單曲《You Send Me》
該曲蟬聯 Billboard 冠軍達三周之久，1960 年發行《What a Wonderful World》單曲
這首歌曲很短的時間便打入美國流行單曲榜上排名第 12 英國單曲排行榜排名第 27 位
之後跳槽到 RCA 唱片公司，因為他善於經商，在 4 年後自己成立了 SAR 唱片公司
60 年代美國仍然存在著嚴重的種族歧視問題 Sam Cooke 卻能跨越進入流行音樂排行榜
並與白人觀眾產生共鳴的黑人歌手之一，儘管他渴望擁有白人觀眾，但是當時的社會氛圍
1964 年他加入了黑人民權運動，創作發行了《A Change Is Gonna Come 改變即將到來》
這首歌成為美國民權運動的標誌性歌曲，當時與 Bob Dylan《Blowin in The Wind》齊名
後來滾石雜誌將《A Change Is Gonna Come》列為「史上最偉大 500 首歌曲」第 12 位
並將 Sam Cooke 譽為「100名有史以來最偉大的藝術家」名單中，名列第16 位
「民權運動先驅」的聲譽卻沒帶給他好運 1964 年底，才 33 歲的他在加州被槍殺身亡
他短暫的生命帶給美國福音音樂、流行音樂，靈魂音樂巨大的影響，被稱為「靈魂樂之王」
Sam Cooke 在 1986 年他被列入搖滾名人堂，1999 年被賦予格萊美終身成就獎

這首 Sam Cooke 1960 年的《Wonderful World》又稱為《（What a）Wonderful World》
雖然受 Louis Armstrong 的《What a Wonderful World》的同名之累，但卻也成績斐然
這首歌曲是由 Lou Adler、Herb Alpert 首先創作，但是兩人都不怎麼把這首歌當一回事
Sam Cooke 聽了以後卻很有興趣，要求加入共同創作修改歌詞，最初三人決定共同使用
Barbara Campbell 也就是 Sam Cooke 老婆的名字來發表 Sam Cooke 演唱並錄製發行
Lou Adler、Herb Alpert 當初都沒想到，後來這首歌曲深受歌迷喜愛並被多次翻唱

1976 年 Johnny Nash 重新再度翻唱，也成功打入了英國音樂排名榜單曲第 25 名

1970 年曾經唱紅電影《畢業生》主題曲的 Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon 解散單飛後
Art Garfunkel 再度找回他的老搭檔 Paul Simon 以及好友 James Taylor 來擔任和聲
在 1978 年以慢節奏，重新編曲錄製翻唱《（What a）Wonderful World》單曲的新版本
同時 Art Garfunkel 也找回當年創作者 Lou Adler、Herb Alpert 再編寫最後一段新歌詞
再度打入美國 Billboard Hot 100排名第 17 名，在 Cash Box Top 100上排名第 15 名
我第一次聽這首歌就是 Art Garfunkel 的版本，在讀高中時期曾經也買過這張黑膠唱片

Sam Cooke 版的《Wonderful World》自發布以來一直受到電影製作人、廣告人的歡迎
在 1978 年電影《動物屋》1983年的 Richard Gere 劇集《Breathless》也都出現過
也曾應用在 2005 年 Will Smith 喜劇片《全民情敵》開場配樂中，許多觀眾一定不陌生
這裡特別要提出來的是 1985年 Levi's 牛仔褲的電視廣告片《Wonderful World》就更紅了
導致在英國原來排名第 27 名，廣告播放之後這首歌在英國重新發行，並且竄高到第 2 名
1985年電影《Witness 證人》Harrison Ford 哈里森福特與 Kelly McGillis 凱莉麥姬莉絲
主演的電影，描述警官 Harrison Ford 為了辦案必須混入保守的基督教門諾教派的安曼人
社區，片中有一幕經典劇情是孤男寡女窩在一個在穀倉裡，Harrison Ford 幫 Kelly McGillis
她們家修裡一部老爺車，結果車子還沒修好，車子的收音機倒是修好了
而且很湊巧的是，收音機傳來點播音樂電台的 DJ 正好要播放《Wonderful World》這首歌
當前奏音樂聲緩緩響起 Harrison Ford 非常開心的說「Oh oh, this is great！this is best」
反正修車也累了，就在車頂蓋上跟著打拍子，然後邊唱著這首歌曲邀請 Kelly McGillis 共舞
兩人開心的笑著跳著舞，隨著音樂跳到忘情處，幾乎有一兩秒鐘，兩人深情對望就要接吻了
忽然 Harrison Ford 一個滑步舞出去接著跳著舞，當時這一段 Self-control 很自律的這一段
相信影迷一輩子都難以忘記，當然也記住了《Wonderful World》Sam Cooke 美妙的歌聲
這一部獲得奧斯卡 8 項提名 2 項得獎的經典電影，更幫這首單曲的人氣推到了最高點
ps: 當年我在西門町的電影院看到這部經典電影片段，也是我第一次聽到 Sam Cooke 的版本
1997 年林憶蓮發行了第 2 張英文歌曲翻唱專輯，主打歌就是《Wonderful World》
這首歌動用了林憶蓮 Sandy Lam 齊豫 Chyi Yu 劉美君 Prudence Liew 港台三位歌手
這張 20 年前的專輯，製作非常用心，歌手的和聲表現也超讚的 MV 拍的也很有質感

可惜美中不足的是 MV 歌詞的中文翻譯有瑕疵，翻唱 Art Garfunkel 版本最後一段歌詞
誤把 Middle Ages 中世紀，當作 middle age or middle aged 中年人，所以歌詞翻譯成為
Don't know much about the Middle Ages 不太了解中年是怎麼回事？
Don't know nothing about "Rise and fall" 不太知道甚麼人生起起落落
其實這兩句中文歌詞翻譯比 Art Garfunkel 版來得更貼切原來 Sam Cooke 的歌詞
只要把 Ages 改成 Aged 甚至可以乾脆誤打誤撞變成新的第三個版本，可惜了！
根據威斯康辛大學麥迪遜分校，非裔美國人研究教授 Craig Werner 對 Sam Cooke 以及
《Wonderful World》的研究，提出他的看法：不要讓 Sam Cooke 開心的音樂節奏蒙蔽了！
這首歌的歌詞可能具有更深層政治意義的暗喻隱藏其中
Werner 在 2002 年他的著作《Change Is Gonna Come 改變即將來臨：音樂，種族和美國的靈魂》
中寫道：Sam Cooke 可能想試圖透過《Wonderful World》這首歌曲的歌詞隱喻來告訴白人聽眾
「不想要了解歷史 ( 黑人奴隸的過往 )」和「不想去了解生物學 ( 種族 )」非裔美國人需要的是愛！
