起初還以為是哪個女歌手唱的，後來才知道原來是主持《青春樂》節目的 Donny Osmond
當時他唱這首歌時他應該已經 15 歲了，只能說他變聲有點晚，不過他那嫩童聲挺適合這首歌曲
以前學唱《The Twelfth Of Never》這首歌曲時，歌詞簡單易懂，很容易朗朗上口，可惜的是
唯有 The Twelfth Of Never 是啥？翻爛了字典也弄不明白，留下了一個解不開的「謎」
經過幾十年也沒去想過這個問題，今天我家小女要學唱《The Twelfth Of Never》自己翻譯歌詞
終於，該躲的還是躲不掉，還是要去面對：The Twelfth Of Never 是啥？不過現在網路方便多了
問一下維基百科，答案就來了：The song's title comes from the popular expression "the 12th of Never", which is used as the date of a future occurrence that will never come to pass. In the case of the song, "the 12th of Never" is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her. The song draws a similar link between the cessation of love and a number of other events expected never to happen. 答案很有趣！

所以 the 12th of Never, 也就是 N 月 12 日是一個不存在的日期，一個永遠不會發生的事情

The Twelfth Of Never 是西方的文化與俚語，類似的在漢語的俚語也有「猴年馬月」的說法
以前有一種說法是這個詞語中的「猴」，本應為「驢」，所以「驢年馬月」用來指不可知的年月
即事情遙遙無期，不能實現。也有專家認為，這個詞義多半源於方言的以訛傳訛，是「何年嘛月」
的諧音變體。例如，口語上我們會說：「這件事情若要小張來完成，那就得等到猴年馬月了！」
意思就是：不可能有那麼一天了！The Twelfth Of Never 說白了，就是「猴年馬月」遙遙無期

田徑選手出身的 Johnny Mathis 在哥倫比亞唱片鼓勵之下，轉換跑道投身歌壇 1957 年發行
《Johnny's Greatest Hits》專輯，其中《The Twelfth Of Never》一舉攻下全美排行榜第 9 名
此後這首歌曲不斷被大牌歌手們翻唱，包括：Andy Williams, Cliff Richard, Glen Campbell 等
1973 年才 15 歲的 Donny Osmond 重新再翻唱發行，也拿下了全美排行榜第 9 名的好成績
甚至到了 2010 年 Barry Manilow 發行一張上世紀十幾首經典老情歌專輯，也還收錄過這首歌
可見它的魅力歷久不衰，或許是先入為主觀念，我個人還是比較偏愛 Donny Osmond 的版本
The Twelfth of Never 愛妳到永遠 - Johnny Mathis
雖然這首歌有費解的俚語「The Twelfth Of Never」但它的前身則是一首謎語對歌式的民謠
這首歌曲的作者，雖是大名鼎鼎的詞曲創作人 Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster
不過他們卻只是重新編曲而已，歌曲主旋律卻是 15 世紀流傳在英國，The Riddle Song：
《I Gave My Love a Cherry》後來隨著五月花號的移民，再流傳到美國阿帕拉契山脈一帶
成了一首民間歌謠或搖籃曲，經過他們重新編曲，才有了經典的《The Twelfth Of Never》
這種手法有點類似 Simon and Garfunkel 改編傳統的英格蘭民謠而成為《Scarborough fair》
別小看這首古老的《I Gave My Love a Cherry》40 – 60 年代一直都有歌手陸續翻唱，包括：
1941 年首先灌錄的歌手 Burl Ives、Sam Cooke、《Where Have All the Flowers Gone》
的創作人 Pete Seeger、Josh White、美國民謠天后 Joan Baez 都對這首民謠歌曲青眼有加
甚至 2007 年曾經唱紅《You're So Vain》的 Carly Simon也再度翻唱了這首古老的民謠

這樣經典的古老民謠，當年雖然只有 17 歲的 Joan Baez 當然是不會放過，她也曾經收錄在
「JOAN BAEZ in San Francisco」的專輯裡，儘管這一是個相當笨拙的錄音，音量很不均勻
但她對這首歌的演繹，卻也是令人難忘的紀念版本
