這首歌曲是美國民歌之父 Pete Seeger 彼特席格
根據諾貝爾文學獎得主俄國作家 Mikhail Sholokhov
於 1934 年出版的小說《靜靜的頓河》裡找到作詞的靈感。
有一段哥薩克人的民歌「蘆葦被女孩們採摘去了。
女孩們都嫁給了男人。男人們都參軍打仗去了」的靈感
深刻地寓意著人類永遠都學不會戰爭的殘酷，和平的可貴。
1955 年 Pete Seeger 應邀前往俄亥俄州 Oberlin College
在飛機上不到 20 分鐘寫下整首歌的前三段歌詞
並在這場校園演唱會上唱了這首歌，結束之後
席格以〈花落何處？〉Where have all the flowers gone
為題發表在當年的 sing out 雜誌上。
1960 年一位畢業於 Oberlin College 的民謠歌手兼野營輔導員
Joe Hickerson 將當年在台下聆聽 Pete Seeger 演唱學會
的這首《Where have all the flowers gone 》教給營隊裡的小孩。
突發靈感地為這首歌，添上了第四及第五段歌詞：
「士兵們都哪裡去了？每個士兵都躺進了墓園，
那些墓園如今何在？每個墳墓都被盛開的朵朵鮮花給覆蓋了」
然後再銜接第一段的「花兒都哪裡去了？」
才算是完善了這首非常經典、迴文式創作的反戰歌曲。
1962 年 Peter, Paul & Mary 三重唱也翻唱了這個版本
收錄在他們出道後，第一張同名專輯中 B 面的第 6 首。
經過翻唱這首歌曲才開始大紅大紫。也正因為 Joe Hickerson
完善了後面兩段歌詞，讓歌曲形成完美的迴文循環
Pete Seeger 也慷慨地把歌詞 20% 版權費給 Joe Hickerson。
