從學生時代到現在，一直都很喜歡 1961 年組建的民謠三重唱 Peter, Paul and Mary
1962 年，他們的第一張專輯，就獲得很高的評價，其中《500 Miles》《Lemon Tree》
《Where Have All the Flowers Gone?》就一舉奪下 Billboard 連續七周第一名的好成績
1963 年《Blowing in the Wind》1969 年《Leaving on a Jet Plane》都是膾炙人口的歌曲
一直以為他們只是歌唱團體，沒有屬於自己的原創作品，其實不然。
我後來發現 1963 年《Puff The Magic Dragon》原來是他們的作品。這首歌曲像一首民謠
更準確地說是像一首童謠，或這說是像一篇寓言故事。這首歌裡有一隻名叫 Puff 的龍
他和一個叫作 Jackie Paper 的小朋友建立了友誼，他們玩在一起，也一起經歷航海冒險
當 Jackie 慢慢長大，對童年的探險不再感興趣，神奇的龍 Puff 也就逐漸褪色不見了！
這首歌的創作靈感，最早的確是來自一則童話式的寓言詩。
1959 年春天，就讀康乃爾大學的 Leonard Lipton 偶然在圖書館裡，看到一本由美國詩人
Ogden Nash 在 1936 年寫的一首童詩《Custard the Dragon 龍蛋卡士塔的故事》百無聊賴
忽然靈感來了，也構思了一段算是「仿作」的有詩意的詞句，到宿舍後想把腦子的詞句
形成文字，就用了當時的室友 Peter Yarrow 的打字機，結果這段草稿就留在打字機上了
當時 Leonard Lipton 忙著準備考試，誰也沒在意這張草稿紙片，畢業後也都各奔前程了！
1963 年 Peter, Paul and Mary 開始籌備第二張專輯《Moving》，上一張專輯裡有些兒童歌曲
《Autumn to May》《It's Raining》效果很好，因此 Peter 希望在新專輯裡也能找到新素材
在準備參考資料的時候，意外發現 4 年前 Lipton 遺留的那張草稿紙，於是他重新整理
完善殘缺的單詞，以歌曲的形式和戲劇性的鋪陳，並賦予音樂節奏性，終於完成了歌詞
結果這首新專輯 B 面的《Puff The Magic Dragon》居然一炮而紅，獲得 Billboard 第二名。

於是，帕夫這隻強大的龍，傷心地潛入他的洞穴裡去了

其實，原始草稿中有一段，最後 Puff 又找到了另一個孩子，這一段被 Peter 刪掉沒有採用
考慮到讓龍的感情單純，較為細膩感人。畢竟 Puff 是 Jackie 的 lifelong friend 而不是 pet
《Puff The Magic Dragon》這首歌熱門了幾年後，有一天 Lipton 意外地接到一通朋友的電話
告知他 Peter 一直在找他，當時 Lipton 都已經忘了那份草稿，但是 Peter 仍然是很慷慨地
將那首歌一半的收益分給他，Lipton 獲得了豐厚的版稅，繼續開發 3D 電影放映系統。
marijuana ( 大麻 )
60 年代，嬉皮 ( Hippy ) 運動、吸毒、同性戀的風潮，從舊金山蔓延到全美國，當時謠傳
《Puff The Magic Dragon》這首歌是暗喻吸食大麻。在 1964 年《新聞周刊》發表的一篇有關
「流行音樂中隱藏毒品信息」的文章助長了這一謠言，並提出了以下穿鑿附會的解釋：
Live by the sea = San Francisco「毒品氾濫的舊金山」autumn mist = smoke「大麻菸霧」
Jackie Paper = rolling papers「捲紙」，Honali = 暗示是以大麻植物聞名的夏威夷小鎮哈納萊
"Puff" = to take a puff from a joint，"Dragon" = a variation of "dragin'," as in taking a drag
from a joint to inhale the smoke. 「吸毒的細節」，這些都使得這首兒童歌曲蒙上陰影。
Douglas AC-47
1964 年 53 架 Douglas AC-47 被改裝成具有強大火力的戰機，向越共發射閃光彈及機槍掃射
這些戰機被稱為「Dragon Ships」這個綽號讓美國人戲稱這種戰機為「Puff The Magic Dragon」
這首美麗歡樂的兒童歌曲，首先是被染上毒品的陰影，接著又被戰爭的殺人機器再掛上等號
這讓一直鼓吹反戰思想的 Peter, Paul and Mary 再也無法忍受，於是他們一再的站出來解釋：
《Puff The Magic Dragon》這首歌是單純敘述：純真的童年的逝去，沒有任何暗示性的意義
The song has "never had any meaning other than the obvious one"
and is about the "loss of innocence in children".
這麼多年過去了，當年的「嬉皮運動風潮」及「越南戰爭」都已經成為過眼雲煙
《Puff The Magic Dragon》這首歌依然留在人們的心中，依然是一首好聽，充滿童趣的歌曲
然而，對於現代的父母而言，再聽聽這首歌曲，也許又會有一番新的解讀方式：
當所有像 Jackie Paper 那樣的孩子們，他們逐漸長大了，當年小時候的天真爛漫與好奇心
已經被成長過程中，新奇的人事物取代掉了，他們有新的朋友、新的學習與挑戰及新的人生
當年陪孩子玩耍的父母就像 Puff 那隻龍一樣，只能逐漸去適應，黯然面對空巢期的寂寞了。
