第一次聽這首歌是在學生時代，先看了不朽的電影才接觸經典的音樂
1967 年，達斯汀霍夫曼 Dustin Hoffman 主演的電影「畢業生 The Graduate」
電影插曲由 Simon and Garfunkel 主唱的 The sound of silence、Mrs. Robinson
以及這首 Scarborough fair 在全球流行歌壇傳唱多年，並且被廣為喜愛。

這首歌的地名 Scarborough 史卡博羅 位於英格蘭約克郡的海濱小鎮
是英格蘭、北歐、波羅的海國家和拜占庭帝國的商人來到這裡買賣的市集。
亨利三世於 1253 年 1 月 22 日頒發的特許狀。( 相當於中國 明朝中期 )
繁華的史卡博羅市集除了以物易物的商業交易，還包括歡樂的餐飲與娛樂業
每年 8 月 15 日，持續 45 天的大型交易活動，直到 1788 年停辦。
Scarborough Fair 與 Greensleeves 綠袖子，同樣都是英格蘭著名的民謠
而它更具有有傳統英格蘭 Riddle folk song ( 謎語民謠對唱 ) 的特色。
中世紀時期，一個不知名的遊唱詩人輾轉於英格蘭約克郡的鄉鎮之間
唱著太平盛世、民風純樸的歌謠，唱著男耕女織、相互調侃逗趣的鬥唱
遊唱詩人唱出一個故事：一個男人要他代為轉達三個難題要刁難一個女子
女子也不甘示弱的回應了三個難題，雙方都提出了有趣而不可能的任務
歌曲裡連諷帶唱地訴說：苛刻挑剔的條件、互不相讓的愛情難成好姻緣
這首 Scarborough fair 不斷提到 Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme
四種香菜各有不同的寓意，說明 Love 真愛最需要的四種核心價值
Parsley 香芹，意謂著 Comfort 撫慰
Sage 鼠尾草，意謂著 Wisdom 智慧
Rosemary 迷迭香，意謂著 Faithfulness 忠誠
Thyme 百里香，意謂著 Courage 勇氣
Sage 也是聖人賢者的意思，Thyme 的發音與 Time 同音
意謂著往聖先賢對愛情的忠告：若要兩情相悅、天長地久
Love 若要經得起時間的考驗就需要 Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme
這首歌裏另外提到的兩種植物是 Thorn and Heather
Thorn 荊棘，意謂著 Pain 痛苦
Heather 石楠花，意謂著 Luck 幸運
能代表 Love 就是 Rose，在愛情裏，伴隨著甜蜜的就是 Thorn 痛苦。
Heather 石楠花最後才出現在歌詞中，好像在說：在愛情中，祝你好運！
兩百多年來，許多遊唱詩人多次修改，並輾轉演唱於英格蘭多個鄉鎮，
因此這首 Scarborough Fair 便產生許多版本，我聽過的就有四五個版本
英國民謠教父、音樂劇作家 Ewan MacColl（ 本名 James Henry Miller ）
他根據以前多個古老的版本，重新整理並且收錄於他的歌本專輯裡
以下這個版本就是 Simon and Garfunkel Scarborough Fair 版本的原型
我第一次看到這個版本，並且嘗試翻譯出來時，就愛上這首歌謠

後來英國民謠歌手 Martin Carthy 根據 Ewan MacColl 歌本的民謠風格
將 Scarborough Fair 改編成為一首更適合吉他演奏的現代版的情歌。
1965 年 24 歲的 Paul Simon 在英國旅行，偶然間聽到 Martin Carthy 的表演
Paul Simon 將這首民謠斷簡殘篇地拆解，再多軌混音加上另一首歌作為副歌
一首聯繫著當時美國越戰時期，他自己作的的反戰歌曲 The side of a hill
將美好和平與戰爭殘酷，用多聲部重疊錄音與對比的手法來豐富這首歌的內容
這首歌後來被套用在電影「畢業生 The Graduate」作為電影插曲。
電影紅了、這首歌也紅了、Martin Carthy 的眼睛也跟著紅了！
當年 Martin Carthy 無私地將自己改編的 Scarborough Fair 送給 Paul Simon
結果 Paul Simon 居然對他隻字不提，獨享名利雙收，態度形同剽竊。
因此，兩人就從此不再來往，甚至一句話也不講，直到 2000 年
Paul Simon 在倫敦表演時邀請年邁的 Martin Carthy 同台演出才稍釋心結。
其實兩人都不必如此小心眼，他們應該要感謝已經過世的 Ewan MacColl
甚至要感謝兩百年來，幾代傳唱的英格蘭遊唱詩人。
對於我而言，當年 Paul Simon 想表達的反戰意念，早已經雲淡風清了，
反而卻歸真返璞地，比較願意去聽這首歌裡濃郁的民謠風格，
經過時間的錘鍊與過濾，無論多了不起的歷史或戰爭終要歸於塵土，
能夠留下來最精華的部分，依然是最平凡也最真實的的部分，
也就是 : 黎民百姓的生活與情感。
